"Before we make music, music makes us"

"At the root of all power and motion, there is music and rhythm, the play of patterned frequencies against the matrix of time.

We know that every particle in the physical universe takes its characteristics from the pitch and pattern and overtones of its particular frequencies, its singing. Before we make music, music makes us."

- Joachim-Ernst Berendt

The Napoleon of Crime

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!

Black Cat taken by Jon Sullivan

Since the last time we saw our musical pilgrim, she has been...

- scribbling down song ideas - in Black Rock City - sleeping (or lack thereof) - learning Pro Tools - working - planning for future travel adventures (Beltane Fire Festival anyone?) - blasting pixels - working - a tone deaf bard killing zombies - philosophizing - tearing up her garden - dreaming of stories and songs to come -

I'm pretty punctual about posting a song a month, but learning Pro Tools and real life drifted their way in. I also wanted to take my time and flesh out the mood of the project. The poem is from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by TS Elliot and the person who recited it is amazing. I've always enjoyed the musical, but the poem itself took a life of it's own and demanded his own original piece.

Plus Macavity has always been one of my favorite characters... ;)

Spark

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

The Wayfarer

Wayfarer, the only way is your footsteps,
there is no other.
Wayfarer, there is no way,
you make the way as you go.

As you go you make the way
and stopping to look behind,
you see the path that your feet will never travel again.

Wayfarer, there is no way -
only foam trails in the sea.

- Antonio Machado

After last month's adventures with We Can Go Within, I decided to recharge for a week and then started work on The Wayfarer. It's a little different than my more recent projects, but is simple and sweet. No drums or rolling bass line, just a piano and a few other melodic layers.

Special Credits go to: Parnowkloth who did the Underwater Sound in the second half of the song. Also, the whale sounds were posted by Our Media on Archive.org and you can listen to the original sample here. Both Archive.org and Soundsnap use a Creative Commons License for all of their sounds.
